Sink a Real Submarine

Let's enjoy a White House sub at Gardner's Basin

Everybody loves submarines from the White House Sub Shop. Let's get takeout and enjoy our lunch at a picnic table at Gardner's Basin located in the north Atlantic City Inlet. We'll watch the clam boats, pleasure craft, charter fishing and sightseeing vessels coming and going from this beautiful, serene location. On the way, let's do some sightseeing!

White House Subs

Among the many things that Jersey is known for, subs done right is near the top. White House Subs has crafted superior submarine sandwiches the New Jersey way since 1946. From their humble beginnings 80 years ago, White House Subs has become world famous for quality-made New Jersey subs.

White House believes that the bread is as important as the meats, cheeses and toppings that go into a top quality sub. Only fresh, top-quality Atlantic City bread is used.

Ducktown Shortcut

Ducktown is a historically Italian American district of Atlantic City, stretching from Missouri Avenue to Texas Avenue. Some years back The Press of Atlantic City called the neighborhood "Atlantic City's Little Italy". Italian immigrants settled Ducktown in the early 20th century and named it for the duck houses they built along the bayfront, where they raised poultry and waterfowl.

Little Italy no more ... over 25 languages are spoken by various Ducktown communities today. It is Atlantic City's melting pot. But still home to Atlantic City's finest restaurants.

Tanger Outlets

Tanger Atlantic City is Atlantic County's upscale, open-air outlet shopping destination featuring a coveted collection of more than 65 top brands and local shops. It is located at the base of the Atlantic Expressway as you enter the city.

The Atlantic City Convention Center, train station and the bus station are all adjacent to Atlantic City outlets.

Pauline's Prairie

Pauline Hill became executive director of the Atlantic City Housing Authority and Urban Redevelopment Agency in 1963. Under her leadership, about 80 acres of South Inlet land were razed to make way for high-rise development. The project displaced more than 4,000 residents, and development never came. The still-empty tract is known as Pauline’s Prairie.

There's lots of potential. Developers are coming in with modest new construction. Check out this quiet part of town.

Absecon Lighthouse

This lighthouse, the tallest in New Jersey and third tallest in America, was first lit in 1857.  There are 228 steps to the top of Old Ab. Absecon Lighthouse was officially decommissioned in 1933.  In 1963, Governor Richard Hughes pressed a button in the New Jersey State House, relighting the lens for the first time in 25 years for the State of New Jersey’s Tercentenary year.

Old Ab's huge 36-plate, First-Order Fresnel lens was made in Paris especially for Absecon Lighthouse. The white light shone 19.5 nautical miles out to sea.

Snug Harbor

Located in the area surrounding Gardner's Basin, Snug Harbor is known as an estuary. It is a coastal lagoon where fresh water intrudes with sea water. Homes built over the water, some of which hold claim to being speakeasies during Prohibition, line the harbor, offering the boating residents quick access to the back bays and ocean.

Views of clam boats and other ocean-going vessels are found at Snug Harbor.

Gardner's Basin

Gardner's Basin is a bayside park and historic area nestled in Atlantic City's Inlet neighborhood. It offers a variety of attractions and activities away from the hustle and bustle of the boardwalk. Here we find waterfront dining, boat excursions, dolphin watching cruises, fishing trips, and the Atlantic City Aquarium.  There is a memorial dedicated to local maritime workers lost at sea.

Across the basin is the US Coast Guard Atlantic City Station.

Atlantic City Clamming Industry

Quahogs and surf clams are used in products such as chowders, sauces, dips and breaded clam strips. Fifty percent of these clams are harvested in Atlantic City. The southern New Jersey coast is endowed with large back bay estuaries that provide an excellent home for the Eastern Hard-Shell clam. We call them Little Necks, Top Necks, Cherrystones and Chowders.

Located next door to Gardner's Basin, we can get up close to the ocean-going clam boats. If you enjoy clam products, there’s a good chance that clam was harvested here.

Steel Pier Diving Bell

The Diving Bell on Steel Pier was a popular attraction. Once in the small bell, passengers were lowered off the pier into the ocean. Underwater, one could look through the portholes at whatever might have been passing by. The bell offered a thrilling ride for many years.

It continued to stand at the pier until 1986. It was headed for the scrap heap, but luckily someone at a Jersey City scrap yard recognized it.

It was donated to Gardner’s Basin in 1989, where it is now displayed.

Atlantic City Aquarium

The Atlantic City Aquarium is an educational experience as well as an entertaining one. Recently opened after an extensive renovation, expect to learn about the marine life of the Atlantic Ocean. See the species in a habitat that resembles the ocean floor.

Discover creatures living along the shores of Atlantic City.

The aquarium prides itself on its interactive activities, and you will have the opportunity to get up-close with the fish, reptiles and mammals in the tanks.
